"Not My Fault!" – Mwalimu Rachel Sets the Record Straight on Sailors’ Downfall
Mwalimu Rachel |
Rachel Muthoni Njeru - known to many as Mwalimu Rachel - has worn many hats: radio presenter, talent manager, emcee, and sometimes, a lightning rod for controversy. In an exclusive tell-all, she’s ready to set the record straight on her journey, her passions, and the scandal that still haunts her career.
"I’ve Been in Entertainment for 18 Years—But You Only See the Headlines"
While fans might know her as a voice on the airwaves or the former manager of Gengetone’s Sailors, Rachel’s roots run deep. “People don’t realize I’ve been in this industry for 18 years,” she shares, tracing her journey back to her start as an intern at Ghetto Radio. Raised in Mombasa and later relocating to Embu, Rachel says she’s a "Coastarian" at heart, balancing a love for life’s finer things with an ability to adapt to any environment.
Leaving Homeboyz Radio: "I Literally Broke Down"
Leaving Homeboyz Radio after seven years was no easy choice. “I was so attached to the audience and my colleagues. My boss, John Rabar, didn’t want to let me go, but he understood,” she explains. “It was the hardest decision I ever made.” Transitioning to NRG Radio marked a major turning point, but it was just one of many pivotal moments in her career.
The Sailors Scandal: "I Own My Mistakes, But I’m Not the Only One to Blame"
Rachel acknowledges the controversy surrounding her management of Gengetone stars, Sailors, and the backlash that followed. “I’ve come to own the story, even if it’s not flattering,” she admits. "If it wasn’t Sailors, it would have been another group—I was a mentor, and in mentorship, you face the heat.”
She opens up about her regrets: “I made mistakes, especially around contracts. We didn’t have clear agreements; we assumed a lot.” But she firmly stands by her role, saying, “I don’t blame myself for Sailors’ downfall. I just wish they’d listened a bit more. I wasn’t the only manager good enough for them.”
Moving On and Focusing on Mentorship
Now, Rachel’s focus has shifted from managing stars to empowering young women. “Would I reconsider managing Sailors? Right now, no. My mind is on other things. I’m mentoring high school girls, guiding them on paths I wish someone had shown me.”
Rachel isn’t here to sugarcoat her story; she’s here to tell it like it is. Despite the ups and downs, she’s moving forward, ready for her next chapter.
