Captain Karauri's Risky Bet: How Gambling Sh25 Million Sparked SportPesa's Billion-Shilling Empire
The High Stakes Gamble That Changed Everything
Captain Ronald Karauri, former Kenya Airways pilot and now Kasarani MP, recently opened up about how a love for gambling and a Sh25 million risk birthed SportPesa, Kenya’s multi-billion-shilling betting giant. In an eye-opening podcast with fellow pilot Eric Mutiso, Karauri shared the story of how his passion for poker led him down an unexpected path to becoming the CEO of one of Kenya’s most successful companies.
“I got hooked on poker after watching some ESPN shows,” Karauri said. “I started playing at home, but eventually I thought I’d become good enough to hit the casinos.”
Poker Nights, Casino Deals, and a Fateful Friendship
Karauri’s regular poker nights at a Nairobi casino led to an unexpected friendship with the casino's owner—an encounter that would change his life forever. As the pair spent more time together, the casino owner mentioned his plans to launch a sports betting platform. Karauri was instantly intrigued.
“He mentioned starting a sports betting firm, and I jumped at the chance to be part of it,” Karauri recalled. “That’s really how SportPesa was born. A random conversation over poker.”
The ex-pilot credits poker for honing his ability to read people and gauge character, a skill he says played a pivotal role in the creation of SportPesa. “The beauty of poker is you can tell someone’s character by how they handle money, how they react to wins and losses. It was these poker nights that built the trust that led to the conversation about starting SportPesa.”
Betting Big on SportPesa—Sh25 Million at Stake
But diving into an unproven business wasn’t easy, and when it came time to invest, Karauri had to put his money where his mouth was. The only asset he had of significant value was a piece of land. Without hesitation, he sold it for Sh25 million to fund the venture.
“I sold the land, and that’s how I came up with the money,” Karauri said, revealing just how much he was willing to risk. Yet, when it came to telling his family, particularly his wife Ruth (who is also a pilot), Karauri chose to stay tight-lipped.
“I didn’t disclose all the details to my family. It was a matter of trust. I just told them I’m putting money into this new venture. I didn’t want them to worry,” he said.
The Controversial Start of SportPesa
What makes SportPesa’s origin even more sensational is that it started as an SMS betting platform, a concept unheard of in the betting world at the time. “We started with SMS betting, something that had never been done anywhere,” Karauri explained. “Back in 2015, smartphones weren’t as widespread, and data wasn’t as accessible. We had to work with what was available.”
At this point, Karauri was still flying high with Kenya Airways as a Boeing 737 captain, juggling his demanding job and the rising star that was SportPesa. For a year and a half, he stayed hands-off with the company’s operations, receiving only periodic updates from his partners. But that hands-off approach wouldn’t last long.
From Cockpit to Boardroom: Karauri’s Bold Move
After a year of SportPesa’s rapid success, Karauri’s partners urged him to take a more active role, even suggesting he should become the CEO. Faced with a life-changing decision, Karauri wrestled with leaving his 11-year aviation career behind. “I wasn’t sure if I should quit flying,” he admitted. “But my experience with Skylux Lounge taught me that if you want a business to succeed, you need to be fully involved.”
In 2015, Karauri made the bold choice to retire from his dream job as a commercial pilot and plunge headfirst into the world of gambling. It was a decision that many might have questioned at the time, but today, it’s clear that this gamble paid off in spades.
The Rise of a Betting Behemoth
SportPesa quickly became a juggernaut, raking in Sh12.6 billion in its first five years. Captain Karauri’s controversial decision to risk everything, including his family’s financial future, on a bet has since paid off handsomely. Now, as the company’s CEO, he continues to steer the firm towards greater heights, all while maintaining his love for poker and high-stakes gambles.
Karauri’s journey from the cockpit to the boardroom is a story of risk, controversy, and an undeniable passion for taking chances—a tale that proves sometimes the biggest risks yield the biggest rewards.
So, what’s the moral of the story? Sometimes you have to put all your chips on the table to win big.
