Bensoul’s Heartbreak: Dumped at His Lowest, but It Fueled His Greatest Music
Benson Mutua aka Bensoul
Former Sol Generation star Bensoul recently opened up about a harrowing chapter in his life that nearly crushed him but also gave birth to some of his best music. In a raw and emotional interview with Philip Karanja on YouTube, the soulful singer shared how his life spiraled when illness hit, only to rise from the ashes like never before.
A Brush with Death: "I Thought I Was Going to Die"
Bensoul revealed how his health took a shocking nosedive, leaving him feeling like death was just around the corner.
“A lot has happened in my life, but there was a time I was sick and genuinely thought I was going to die,” Bensoul confessed.
It wasn’t just the physical toll of the illness that broke him, but also the emotional agony that followed. At his lowest point, Bensoul’s then-girlfriend ended their relationship, adding salt to the wound.
Dumped for Dying: "They Thought I Had AIDS"
In what sounds like a tragic movie script, Bensoul was abandoned when he needed support the most. His girlfriend's family speculated that his frail condition meant something worse.
“Her family said, ‘Huyu jamaa anakaa kufa, maybe he even has AIDS,’ because I was so sick and had lost so much weight,” he recalled.
But the truth was far from the cruel rumors. Bensoul wasn’t battling AIDS—he was fighting tuberculosis (TB), a disease that ravaged his body and stripped him of his strength.
The Turning Point: "I Had Lost My Voice... But Found My Music"
As Bensoul’s health worsened, he made a tough decision: he went back home to his family, broken and voiceless. But what seemed like the end of the road turned out to be the beginning of something much greater.
“I had lost my voice, I couldn’t sing... so I just started writing songs,” Bensoul revealed. With nothing left but his thoughts and a fragile body, he poured his soul into songwriting, envisioning melodies even though he couldn’t sing them out loud.
The Healing Power of Silence: A New Creative Process
In the solitude of his illness, Bensoul discovered an entirely new way to create music. He found himself writing from his subconscious, crafting songs in a way he had never done before.
“That experience unlocked something in me,” he shared. “Now, when I go to the studio, I don’t write with loud music. I go somewhere quiet and just envision the song. I get the purest words from that.”
This unconventional approach to songwriting has produced some of Bensoul’s best work to date, even if others in the industry find it hard to understand.
“I try explaining it to people, and sometimes they just don’t get it. But I see the music,” Bensoul said, a testament to how deeply personal his creative process has become.
From Heartbreak to Triumph: Bensoul’s Greatest Music Yet
Despite the heartbreak, the illness, and the isolation, Bensoul has come out stronger than ever. His pain became his muse, fueling his most inspired music yet. While the industry may struggle to grasp his process, there’s no denying that his journey has given us some of the most powerful songs in his catalog.
For Bensoul, being dumped while fighting for his life was the ultimate betrayal—but it also became the foundation for a rebirth in his music.
